Mixing engine oils

Besides the engine oils flow performance associated with viscosity (for instance combining 5W30 and 10W40 oils), it's useful to understand what happens when engine oils categories are mixed. Top-grade engine oils meet API's SH and CD performance specifications. A heavy-duty engine oil such also meets API's SH engine oils specifications, and as such it meets the engine oils service requirements for use in passenger cars and can be safely used in cars. However, engine oils also carry additional engine service specifications such as API CG-4, which make it a suitable engine oil for use in heavy-duty truck engines. Engine oils do not have these qualifications, they should NOT be mixed in a heavy-duty truck engine. Even though the engine oils are compatible, this would be a mis-application.

Engine oils are so confusing. Why are there so many different types? Different types of engines require different types of engine oils depending on the age of the car, the type of car, the driving conditions and whether the car has a diesel or petrol engine. Barton have carefully selected a range of engine oils that makes selecting the correct engine oil very easy. This range of engine oils is designed to meet the requirements of all types of cars from the newer high performance cars to the older high mileage cars.

Many companies operating with mixed fleets of diesel and natural gas engines like to use one engine oil for both applications. However, changes in engine design and engine oils requirements have made it much more difficult for one engine oil to provide superior performance in both applications.

Natural gas engine oils are formulated to specifically meet and withstand the effects of nitrogen and oxidation, which are common concerns in natural gas engine service. Nitration and oxidation of engine oils generally lead to viscosity increase and deposits.

Tests performed on a laboratory test engine reveal that engine oils specifically designed for natural gas engines do a much better job of controlling viscosity increase than commercial diesel engine oils. It is recommended that the use of natural gas engine oils, is your product choice for natural gas engines.
