Heating oil - an affordable solution
Heating oil is the most affordable home heating option Ñ plain and simple. Don't be fooled by slick gas utility conversion plans offering free equipment give-aways, rebates, free gas line hook-ups or free oil tank removals.
Over the past twelve years, heating oil prices have been lower than gas heat. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, heating oil can cost nearly 30% percent less than natural gas, and because of the difference, leading consumer groups like the Consumer Energy Council of America encourage heating oil users to conserve as opposed to converting to gas heat. The price differential between heating oil and gas has been about the same for much of the 1990s, and there's no evidence it will change. Unfortunately, some consumers convert before they compare.
Consumers who convert from heating oil often do so because of aggressive sales tactics by the gas utilities -- a practice that has gone on for years. Back in 1998, Boston Globe consumer reporter Bruce Mohl exposed such tactics in a news article which took Boston Gas to task:
Boston Gas is at it again, running a heating-season advertising campaign that magnifies the virtues of natural gas and the vices of heating oil. ... As with most ad campaigns, the goal is not an accurate comparison of the two fuels. It is to get as many heating-oil customers as possible to switch to natural gas, even if the switch doesn't make much economic sense. ...
The article goes on to highlight an unfair marketing tactic about which heating oil dealers have long complained. Boston Gas urged heating oil consumers to switch based on a faulty fuel cost comparison. The utility compared:
A home that uses heating oil for space heating and electricity for water heating, cooking and clothes drying and a home that uses natural gas for all those uses
The comparison is faulty because of the high cost of electricity. The owner of the first home would realise tremendous savings with a simple, minimal investment -- converting the water heater to heating oil.
Like other gas utility marketing plans, Boston Gas tried to obscure the fact that heating oil costs less. When pressed by the Globe, however, Boston Gas acknowledged "gas is more costly than heating oil."
