Accidental exposure to high concentrations of mists or vapours generated during use of metal working fluids may cause irritation of the eye, nose and respiratory tract. As with lubricating oils, the main potential health hazard of metal working fluids is the possibility of severe, potentially fatal, damage to lung tissue, which can occur following aspiration of even small amounts of low viscosity (<7cSt @ 40°C) metal working fluids into the lungs. An additional, potentially serious hazard with metal working fluids is the possibility of high pressure injection through the skin.
