A bit about metal working fluids

Metal working fluids are utilized to "cool" and lubricate a metalŐs surface during the machining process metal working fluids prevent heat buildup at the location where the metal is machined so thanks to metal working fluids the finished product should be smooth and free of staining or distortion of the metal. There are three distinct groups of metal working fluids which are vanishing oils, coolants, and straight oils; each of these groups of metal working fluids may be subdivided by their base oil (mineral oil, vegetable oil, and synthetic) and their additives (anti-wear, rust inhibitors, polishing, and extreme pressure). Two additional categories of metal working fluids have been included in this group which are in-process coatings and miscellaneous materials (oils and additives) generally utilized in the metal working industry. Since each machining application is different and unique, we strongly recommend the use of the recommendation form of metal working fluids. Metal working fluids are liquids mainly consisting either of lubricating base oils (neat oils) or a mixture of lubricating oil with water and surfactant (so-called soluble oils). The soluble cutting fluids of metal working fluids also contain biocides and antioxidants. Some metalworking fluids are synthetic fluids based on polyglycols or aqueous solutions of chemicals. Metal working fluids are a diverse range of products, their composition depending on suppliers formulations and whether they are soluble or neat cutting oils. Irrespective of the type and composition of cutting fluids, metal working fluids have not been associated with acute systemic toxic effects. Some of the metal working fluids may cause skin irritation, especially during prolonged or repeated skin contact. Regular, repeated skin contact to metal working fluids can give rise to dermatitis. Accidental exposure to high concentrations of mists or vapours generated during use of metal working fluids may cause irritation of the eye, nose and respiratory tract. As with lubricating oils, the main potential health hazard of metal working fluids is the possibility of severe, potentially fatal, damage to lung tissue, which can occur following aspiration of even small amounts of low viscosity (<7cSt @ 40ˇC) metal working fluids into the lungs. An additional, potentially serious hazard with metal working fluids is the possibility of high pressure injection through the skin. This can cause considerable damage to underlying tissues, even when surface effects caused by metal working fluids are minimal.
